Casa do Amarelindo, Charming Brazilian Guest House in Bahia

I love boutique hotels that capture the culture and soul of a place, and this charming 10-room guest house in the center of bustling Pelourinho does just that. A colorful blend of colonial Bahia and African influences, Casa do Amarelindo is surrounded by great museums, restaurants, shops and brightly colored homes ... and that batucada rhythm and beat are never far away!

One of my trusted Insiders stayed here for four nights and describes it as excellent. "The high-end design, attention to detail, and high level of service are the standard," she says. "The location is extremely convenient for sightseeing ... just steps away from key historic sites. We had a 1st floor room—spacious and nicely appointed with modern furnishings and tasteful design features—with a very nice terrace overlooking the sea. The room was also well sound-proofed, a must-have feature in the Pelourinho area. The common areas were all great; the restaurant, bar, and especially the 4th floor terrace, a fantastic spot for an after-dinner drink with open views on the bay. The swimming pool, though small, allows for a delightful cooling off during the hottest hours of the day. The breakfast was also excellent. Staying at Pelourinho has its pros and cons. It is quite dangerous to walk outside of the delimited/policed areas, and definitely at night. NB: beaches are at least a 15-minute cab ride away."
