EXPERT CONNECT: Borgo Bernardini, a Grand Villa Rental in Tuscany, Italy

Lucca, Tuscany, Italy

An aerial view of Borgo Bernardini, a large grand villa and estate in the hills near Lucca, in Tuscany, Italy.

You'll feel like Italian nobility at this ornate villa and bucolic estate in Tuscany's Lucchese hills, once the hunting retreat of the late Count Cosmini Bernardini. Just 10 minutes from the Medieval walled city of Lucca, and one hour from Florence, the villa dates back to the 1600s, but Borgo Bernardini has been carefully renovated and is filled with antiques and period reproduction furnishings. With space for 24 guests, plus an amazing gourmet kitchen, it's a superb getaway for large families, groups of friends, and foodies who love to cook.

Although the mansion is full of historic details and wood-beamed ceilings, it's been updated with modern amenities. The 12 bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms (some with Jacuzzis), telephones, individual temperature controls and a connection to the central music system. Other features include public salons with fireplaces; a lounge with satellite TV and DVD; an office with a computer, printer, fax; Wi-Fi throughout; a gated enclosure with a surveillance security system; a laundry room; and a small fitness room.

I recommend  Borgo Bernardini for anyone who loves to eat or entertain, as there's a fantastic industrial kitchen that happens to be used as a cooking school several times per year, as well as a formal dining room and a wine cellar stocked with regional wines. Gorgeous outdoor spaces are ideal for al fresco feasts. How about lunch under the garden gazebo and then dinner by the fountainhead fish pond? Then head to the music room for a sing-along by the Grand Piano. If you book in advance, you can arrange a private cooking classes for your and your group! Not keen on cooking? Then you'll be interested in this SPECIAL OFFER*: Private chef service is included for daily breakfast plus lunch OR dinner. (*Cost of food and beverages not included.)

You'll be well looked after by the villa's young and friendly staff, which includes a house manager and caretakers for the grounds and the outdoor salt-water pool. Babysitters can be arranged. Beyond strolling the gardens and woods, there's plenty to do in the area. Take a mountain bike for a spin, or ask the concierge to arrange horse-back riding or hot-air balloon trips. The Mediterranean Sea is just 20 minutes away, so you'll appreciate this perk ... the villa's owners are members of the prestigious Forte dei Marmi Beach Club, and villa guests gain entrance there. NB: Don't miss the weekly BBQ hosted at the nearby rose gardens, where you can mingle with guests of other villas on the massive estate, such as Villa del Fattore

From €4,572 to  €5,715 per night (or from €40,005 per week).
