Swapping jeeps for quad bikes and the grassy plains of Kenya for the desert-dry salt pans of the Makgadikgadi in northern Botswana, this five-day Kubu safari, from Black Tomato, takes you to a remote and wildlife-rich landscape that will take your breath away.

The first part of the trip is based at Jack's Camp, a 1920s-style tented camp surrounded by 6,000 square miles of almost lunar-like landscape. Roughing it? No way. Think antique beds, crisp cotton sheets, Persian rugs underfoot, gourmet meals around a campfire and an ever-attentive staff. Each day, you'll head out across scorched white earth on easy-to-ride quad bikes with an expert zoologist guide in search of meerkats, hyenas, elephants, wildebeest and zebras.

Next stop: Kubu Island, home to the world's largest flamingo colony and ancient fossil beaches where you'll dine by candlelight and sleep in a luxurious roll-mat duvet under a star-spangled sky. Back at Jack's Camp, you'll meet ingenious “bushmen” trackers who will reveal their ancient knowledge of animals, plants and survival skills.
