Hotel Puro

Palma de Mallorca, Mallorca, Spain

The 26 rooms and suites of Hotel Puro are a minimalist's dream; dark hardwood floors, black slate bathrooms, touches of Mallorcan fabrics for some added warmth, as well as funky furnishings and high-tech facilities like a Bose sound system and a digital library with DVDs and music.

This is one hot hotel, originally a 14th-century palacio, it's been renovated into a stylish urban beach club. The 26 rooms and suites are a minimalist's dream; dark hardwood floors, black slate bathrooms, touches of Mallorcan fabrics for some added warmth, as well as funky furnishings and high-tech facilities like a Bose sound system and a digital library with DVDs and music. But be warned, style sometimes comes before comfort and practicality. If you're splashing out, the room with the sunken black bath is well worth it for adding a spot of decadence to your stay. Enjoy your evenings chilling out in the Opio Bar—where the DJ plays to a hip crowd. Much more than the hotel, I love the Puro Beach Club for lunch or dinner (yummy Asian and Mediterranean cuisine), where you can laze by the pool, have lunch—it's great looking yet weirdly located near the airport! There's no spa in the hotel but at Puro Beach Club you can get a poolside massage and take a morning rooftop Yoga class (I'm a regular in summer months). Enjoy the beachclub whether or not you are a hotel guest. NB: The hotel is a bit cramped for space, so unless you want to stay in town, Palma, better to stay beach or countryside.

Room rates from €165.

Insider tip from Mr & Mrs Smith, one of my trusted resources:

"If the budget stretches, the room with the sunken black bath is well worth it."
