Sandy Lane, A Glamorous Beachside Resort in Barbados
St. James, Barbados, West Indies

For many I know, Barbados is synonymous with the iconic Sandy Lane—and for good reason. With its dominant presence on the stylish West Coast and reputation as a celebrity favorite (Tiger Woods had his wedding reception there), it has made its mark.
The hotel would only be my personal choice for a Caribbean jaunt if money were no object and I was in the mood to be ‘chic at the beach' on holiday … for those seeking service to meet your every whim with top-notch spa, tennis and golf, it truly delivers—in a way like very very few hotels in the world ever do. My stay was impeccable. Registration takes place in your room with a drink in hand, and from there head immediately to the beach (the nicest on the West Coast), while your bags are unpacked (I treasure this service). Rooms are high-tech (picture framed, flat paneled televisions are clever and indoor/outdoor stereos are a nice touch) and roomy with a large, comfortable and well furnished terrace. My pick: one of the corner one bedroom suites in the dolphin or seahorse wings. I adore their unique use of deep pink with creme in the main public areas (it works). The spa and fitness center with over 50,000 square feet impresses—not inviting in decor, but notable for the only Rasshoul in the Caribbean (a Moroccan mud treatment room with both dry and steam heat), a zen all white relaxation room and a plush private personal training room. The outdoor relaxation area facing a large natural rock whirlpool and waterfall is deliciously inviting, book in hand or when a siesta is needed. Kids will love the waterfalls at the winding, never-ending pool and the Treehouse Club, with every possible activity for kids 3–18, including field trips to see some of Barbados' local treasures. How the staff tie-in the parents to partake in activities that are fun for the whole family is fabulous and quite sweet. For dining, we liked the cozy banquettes with live piano at the L'Acajou restaurant (one of the best meals I had on the island) and swishly stylish Monkey Bar, for a drink & cigar after dinner. Staff are superior to most resorts, GM Robert Logan is adored by staff; his training and care shows through to guests. Bottom line: Showroom styling and very expensive, but a top-notch choice for those seeking a want-for-nothing resort experience in the sun. Weather is perfection December through March.
Room rates from $950 per night (low season; from $1450 high season).
