Talaa 12, A Contemporary Townhouse in Marrakech
Marrakech, Morocco, Africa

If you're off to Marrakech to soak up the atmosphere of the souks and meander the alleyways of the old city, this intimate, 8-room riad in the heart of the Medina is a very good option. Geetika Jain, a well-heeled traveler and on my Insiders, recently stayed at Talaa 12 and named it a real cut above other riads, but note there is some whispering that service & upkeep very lately have gone downhill.
Rather than overdone with opulent furnishings, Talaa 12 has more of a spare, contemporary take on traditional Moroccan style, with white walls and neutral fabrics offset by colorful textiles, modern artworks, crafts and objets. The airy rooms and suites have air-conditioning, WiFi, and large windows that overlook the hushed, central courtyard with fragrant orange trees and a soothing fountain. Head to the roof terrace for superb views of the city and the Atlas Mountains in the distance.
The Belgian owners, Marianne and Philippe, are welcoming and knowledgeable and can arrange tours of the city or excursions to the mountains; a great local touch. Spend the day wandering the streets of the souk with a guided cultural tour provided by the riad, relax in one of the nearby garden pools (day passes from $15), or head to the Palmeraie, the palm grove oasis just outside of town, where Talaa 12 guests have complimentary access to the trendy Nikki Beach pool club. Although the riad doesn't have a spa, it does have an authentic hammam, and Swedish or Moorish massages can be arranged. Throughout the townhouse are several b'hous (open lounges), including a huge one with a fireplace—a relaxing spot for meeting fellow guests and finding peace and quiet away from the city. There is no formal restaurant as such, but there is a table d'hôtes each night, and guests can enjoy Moroccan fare either on the terrace, in the courtyard or in the dining room.
Room rates from $319.
Insider tip from Mr & Mrs Smith, one of my trusted sources:
"The two airy modern-opulent deluxe suites have private balconies, which open onto the courtyard, and one has a fireplace."
